Wordsmith and Teacher

I’m a global nomad and a word nerd. I’ve lived, studied and worked in the U.S., Asia and Europe. I work across time zones and across cultures every day.

My philosophy – Make learning fun, make communications effective.

Teaching

I teach high school students in the U.S. and Asia who are aiming for selective colleges in the U.S.

  • I work directly with private students in Asia and the U.S.  I take the stress out of the college essay process for families. I show students how to develop their essays and keep them on track for submitting their applications on deadline.
  • I tutor high-achieving students who want to improve their written English, including students throughout Asia.
  • I also partner with college counselors in the U.S. and Hong Kong, adding my expertise to the wide range of services that college counselors provide.

Communications consulting

I specialize in writing, editing and communications training for higher education and business.

Background

I’ve always worked in the overlap between communications and technology.  For 20 years, I worked as a multi-media journalist in the U.S., Hong Kong and Singapore.  In 2007, I began teaching others to write well. I have led dozens of communications trainings, both online and face-to-face, always with a sense of fun and a spirit of supporting the students’ own goals.

For 10 years, I was online communications and learning manager for the University of Minnesota Center for Youth Development.  I developed online learning modules for university staff, student workers and teenagers in our youth program. I also wrote and edited curricula, journal articles, video scripts, grant proposals, reports and hundreds of faculty blog posts.

Now I am a wordsmith and teacher. I divide my time between St. Paul, Minnesota, USA and the Philippines.  My spouse and I have two children, both of them recent college graduates. I love cycling, yoga and jazz music.
